Before you begin

Inspect the packaging

Only begin if the packaging looks untampered. Confirm the device authenticity flow (packaging seals, included items) — if anything seems wrong, contact official support before connecting the device.

Gather what you need

Have a computer with a USB port (or compatible smartphone), your new Trezor device, and a secure, private place to write down your recovery seed. Turn off cameras or avoid public places while writing the seed.

Step 1 — Start at Trezor Start

Open the official start page

Go to the recommended official starting page to download the Trezor Suite app or run the web installer. Follow the instructions on-screen — the official start page guides you through the recommended sequence: download Suite (desktop or web), plug in your device, and follow the setup flow.

Why use the official start page

Using the official start page ensures you get the latest verified installer and minimizes risk from counterfeit or malicious software. Always check you are on the official domain before downloading or connecting your hardware wallet.

Step 2 — Install Trezor Suite

Download and install

Install Trezor Suite on your desktop for the best experience, or continue in browser for the web app. The Suite will detect your device and guide firmware install if required. Installing the provided suite is the safest, supported path to configure, manage accounts, and perform firmware updates.

On-device confirmation

Trezor requires you to confirm actions physically on the device. This is critical for security — never confirm a transaction on your computer; always confirm on the Trezor device display itself.

Step 3 — Firmware & first setup

Install firmware if prompted

Your Trezor is normally shipped without firmware. The Suite will prompt you to install the latest official firmware. Allow the update, and only use installers from the official site to avoid compromised firmware.

Create a PIN

During setup you will be asked to set a PIN. Choose a PIN you can remember but is not guessable; the device will limit incorrect attempts and wipe if too many wrong tries — this protects against physical theft attempts.

Write down your recovery seed

The device will generate a recovery seed (12, 18, or 24 words depending on model and settings). Write these words on the supplied recovery card or other secure medium — never store your seed digitally or photograph it. This seed is the single highest-value secret for recovering funds.

Step 4 — Verify, backup, and secure

Verify seed on device

Follow the Suite prompts to verify a subset of seed words on the device. This verifies the seed was properly generated and recorded.

Consider Shamir or passphrase options

Advanced users can enable Shamir Backup (if supported by device) or use a passphrase (a BIP39 passphrase) to create additional layers of protection. Understand these features well before using them — a passphrase is effectively a second secret; losing it means losing access to funds.

Step 5 — Transfer funds & test

Send a small test transfer

Before transferring large amounts, send a small test amount from an exchange or hot wallet to an address you generate in Trezor Suite. Confirm the received funds and then proceed with larger transfers.

Regularly update Suite & firmware

Keep the Trezor Suite app and firmware up to date. Official updates include security fixes and feature improvements. Always apply updates from official sources only.

Security best practices

Never share your seed or PIN

No one from Trezor or support will ask for your seed. If someone asks for it, it is a scam. Keep seed offline and physical.

Buy only from official channels

Purchase Trezor devices only from the official website or authorized resellers. Buying from unauthorized sellers increases the risk of tampered or cloned devices.

Store recovery separately

Consider splitting copies of your recovery (securely) or using a trusted vault service if you require geographic redundancy. Always prefer methods that minimize digital exposure.

Troubleshooting & support

Common issues

If the device doesn't boot, or the Suite doesn't detect it, try a different USB cable or port, ensure firmware is installed, and consult the official support guides. If you see signs of tampering on the package, contact support immediately.
